You're reading: Shakhtar faces tough quarterfinal test

Shakhtar Donetsk will face arguably Europe’s fiercest club in Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals in April following an open draw held in Nyon, Switzerland today.

Shakhtar will play the first leg away, having drawn second in the pairing.

The Donetsk club hasn’t lost a match at home since 2008.

The last time a Ukrainian club made it this far in European club competition was in 1999 when Dynamo Kyiv made it to the semifinals but lost to Bayern Munich.

Barcelona is led by two-time FIFA Golden Ball winner Lionel Messi of Argentina.

The last eight left in Europe’s premiere club competition features three English clubs, two Spanish and one apiece from Italy, Germany and Ukraine.

The other fixtures will see Real Madrid face Tottenham, Chelsea versus Manchester United, and Internazionale against Schalke.
