The 15th Annual New British Film Festival takes place on Nov. 26 – Dec. 2 in Kyiv. Its program includes five films and a collection of short films. All films are shown at Kyiv Cinema (19 Velyka Vasylkivska St) in English with Ukrainian subtitles. Tickets are Hr 80.

Lady in the Van

“The Lady in the Van”

Nicholas Hytner’s film is a screening of autobiographical comedy play by Alan Bennett. Miss Shepherd, played by the star of British cinema and theater Maggie Smith, is a woman “temporarily” living in her car that has been parked in a driveway for 15 years. Ultimately, she becomes an attraction of the whole district and the main heroine of the Bennett’s play.

The Lobster movie

“The Lobster”

This love story that has won the Jury Prize at the latest Cannes Film Festival is set in the dystopian near future where it is forbidden to be single. All the single people are forcedly taken to The Hotel, where they are obliged to find a romantic partner within 45 days or they will be transformed into beasts and sent off into The Woods. Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz and Léa Seydoux star in the movie.

Set Fire to the Stars

“Set Fire to the Stars”

This biographic film from 1950s is about a highly acclaimed Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. His admirer John Brinnan invites him to New York for the series of poetry readings. As Thomas is known for frivolities, bad temper and problems with alcohol, Brinnan takes him to his family retreat in the woods of Connecticut. Main roles are played by Elijah Wood and Celyn Jones.

45 years

“45 Years”

This melodrama starring Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay has won Silver Berlin Bear for Best Actress and Best Actor at Berlin International Film Festival 2015. Directed by Andrew Haigh film focuses on the story of Mr. and Mrs. Mercer, the couple that is going to celebrate their 45th anniversary. Suddenly they receive an unexpected letter, which contains potentially life changing news. Will the past ruin the ideal marriage?

BAFTA Shorts 2015

This is a collection of the short films nominated for BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television) Award in 2015. Eight short films comprise the variety of genres and topics.
