You're reading: What to watch at French Cinema Nights from Jan. 28 to Feb. 3

The annual French Cinema Nights movie festival will take place from Jan. 28 to Feb. 3 at Kyiv Cinema (19 Velyka Vasylkivska St). The festival, organized by Arthouse Traffic and the French Institute in Ukraine, screens the best new French movies.

This year,
the program includes five movies, all screened in French with Ukrainian
subtitles. Tickets are Hr 80 and can be bought online at

Maryland (2015)

After
returning from the war in Afghanistan, Vincent suffers from painful memories.
He gets hired to protect Jessie, the wife of a venerable Lebanese businessman,
in his estate Maryland on the French Riviera. Jessie attracts Vincent, but at
the same time his fears and hallucinations continue to torture him. And despite
the apparent tranquility of the estate, Vincent perceives an external threat.

Dheepan (2015)

A fighter from
the Tamil Tigers rebel group escapes Sri Lanka after the end of the Indian

family. The three runaways settle in the suburbs of Paris and gradually become
closer, facing the cruelty of the immigrant neighborhoods together.

Une Heure de Tranquillité (2014)

Busy
dentist Michel Leprosy finally has a day off. At a flea market, he finds a 1958
vinyl recording of his favorite musician and rushes home to listen to it. But
it seems that the whole world conspires to deprive him of this moment of
happiness. His wife demands a serious conversation “about us.” Pipes break and
the apartment has a major flood. And Michel needs an hour, just one hour, to
listen to his precious recording.

Mon Roi (2015)

Tony finds herself in a rehabilitation center after a skiing accident. She gets dependent on painkillers and medical personnel, and she recalls other dependences from her past – the man she once loved, Giorgio. A long and difficult rehabilitation process, physical and spiritual, begins for Tony, in which the work with the body can help free her spirit.

Les Deux Amis (2015)

Clement, a
shy actor, is madly in love with Mona, a saleswoman. But Mona has a mystery
