You're reading: Russian underground rock in Kyiv

Boris Grebenshchikov, the guru of Soviet underground rock, will come to Kyiv this week to celebrate 40 years with his band Aquarium on stage.

Naturally, they will perform their best hits of four decades, and you can bet that at least two-thirds of the audience in Zhovtnevy Palats will be signing along.

Starting in the 1970s, Aquarium created a unique musical aesthetic in the USSR. Influenced by a variety of musical styles and cultures, the band’s sound nevertheless remained recognizable, in quiet love ballads and light dancing reggae alike.

Grebenshchikov, the leader, is famous beyond Russia and even the former USSR.

His albums were recorded and released throughout Europe, and North America, while he made friends in the music industry in the West as well as among spiritual leaders of India.
