Global Voices: Why Ukrainians are moving abroad
According to Migration in Ukraine: Facts and Figures, a report published by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Sept. 2011, 6.5 million of Ukrainians, or 14.4 percent of the population, are emigrants. Among the most popular emigration destinations are Russia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Italy, Portugal and Spain. Ukraine's population of approximately 45.5 million people “is shrinking by 330,000 per year,” says the IOM report, and emigration, no doubt, contributes to this downward demographic trend.
