The Russian edition of Newsweek has just been officially warned that one its recent issues contained information, opposing Muslims and Christians to each other (see article: http://korrespondent.net/russia/650633).
The constitution of Russia, like Ukraine, officially espouses the right to a free press. Russian law, similar to Ukrainian, gives the government the right to limit that right substantially for several reasons. One of the most open-ended, is in the case of stimulation of international and interreligious hostility.
While, in theory, few thinking person support racists or inflammatory articles, it is clear that this point is perfectly crafted to be abused.
In Ukraine, it was used aggressively by President Kuchma to force the closing Silski visti in 2003-2004.
Simply put, it allows the government to close any newspaper for any reason. It is a clear threat to free press in Russia, as well as here in Ukraine.
