German Foreign Minister: Berlin committed to Georgia's territorial integrity

BERLIN (AP) - Germany's foreign minister said Friday his nation remains committed to preserving Georgia's territorial integrity and its path to full NATO membership.
Frank-Walter Steinmeier told reporters after a meeting with his Georgian counterpart, David Bakradze, that Germany is following the situation in Georgia's breakaway territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia "with particular concern."
"I want to stress that for us, as well as for the international community, Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty is beyond all question," Steinmeier said.
Last week, Russia moved to establish stronger ties with Abkhazia and South Ossetia. On Monday, an unmanned Georgian reconnaissance aircraft was shot down, apparently by a Russian MiG-29 fighter in Georgian airspace.
Washington has expressed concern that Russia is moving toward recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which broke away from Georgian government control in wars in the early 1990s. The territories are not recognized by any country, but Moscow has granted the vast majority of the regions' residents Russian citizenship.
Germany was one of several European countries that blocked a push by the US to invite Georgia and Ukraine to join NATO.
Steinmeier stressed that Berlin was interested in seeing Georgia eventually join the alliance, but felt that it was not yet ready to do so.
"We of course respect any concerns anyone in Germany may have regarding Georgia's future membership in NATO," Bakradze said, adding that the important element was Berlin's commitment to Georgia's future in the alliance. "The rest are issues we need to resolve."
