Only fall in hryvnia exchange rate can impact inflation, says Tymoshenko
Yulia Tymoshenko, Ukraine's Prime
Minister
Kyiv, November 20 (Interfax-Ukraine) - A decrease in the hryvnia exchange rate will be the only factor limiting inflation growth in Ukraine, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has said.

"Today, the only factor influencing inflation will be a fall in the hryvnia exchange rate, and, as a result, the rise in the price of imported goods," she said at a council with regional governors in Kyiv on Thursday.

"The National Bank of Ukraine is carrying out a respective policy on the hryvnia exchange rate, the latter is becoming weaker, and this will trigger an impact from all imported products on the level of inflation," Tymoshenko said.

The prime minister said that the price of numerous goods - even ones that have significantly fallen in price on the international markets due to the financial downturn - remains unchanged in Ukraine. Tymoshenko said that these goods include sunflower, meat, oil, and food.

She also said she had ordered the formation of a reserve of diesel fuel and oil products

At times I wonder if this women is for real. During the whole year she maintained that inflation was under control. Inflation is here to stay as the grivna has weakened by 24% in the last 2 months. As usual she blames others.
The grivana weakened because of the trade deficit.
Maybe a little bit less populistic rethoric and a more conservative government budget would help. Anyway the IMF will force it on her.

What nonesense from the above commentator. The Tymoshenko governmnet did make significant inroads into curbing inflation. In July of this year the rate of inflation was dropping for the 5th consecutive month and, in that month, deflation of 0.5% was recorded. Sadly, some of her anti-inflation measures were thwarted by the president who even stopped regional governors from attending meetings in Kyiv to discuss the subject. Thankfully, this restriction has been lifted. And please, lets abandon the \"populist\" tag. Tymoshenko is merely implementing socially and fiscally responsible policies of the like that can be found in most modern European democracies.
