According to him, during consultations on enhanced cooperation between Ukraine and the European Union in Brussels, the EU confirmed its intention to give practical support to the initiatives of Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko aimed at strengthening the safety and security of gas and oil supply and transit with the use of Ukrainian infrastructure, the presidential press service reported on Wednesday.
Sokolovsky noted that European commission wants to see the rapid modernization, through joint efforts, of Ukraine's gas transport system, [making it] the main constituent of reliable natural gas imports to Ukraine and the EU countries. With this aim, Head of the Energy Security Group of the European Commission's, Directorate General of Foreign Relations Fauzi Bensarsa is to visit Kyiv soon to hold talks with Ukraine on organizing an international investment conference with the European Commission on the modernization of the Ukrainian gas and transport system.
