European Union's web address racks up 3 million registrations

14 January, 20:36 | Associated Press
BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- Europe's .eu Web address has racked up more than 3 million registrations, the European Commission said Wednesday.

The European Union's executive launched the domain name in 2006 and has encouraged companies and individuals to use it for promoting their Web sites across Europe -- although many users are still firmly attached to national addresses.

The .eu name was the ninth most popular Internet domain name registered worldwide last year, well behind the commercial .com, China's .cn and Germany's .de., according to the EU executive.

Germans held nearly a third of .eu addresses registered last year, followed by the Netherlands and Britain.

And it was German user who crossed the 3 million threshold on Jan. 11, the EU said.
