At the request of Hungary, Ukraine may increase its electricity supplies to the country by 2-2.5 times, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said at a meeting with Hungarian President Janos Ader, the Ukrainian government's press service has reported.

Azarov thanked the Hungarian side for their decision to allow Ukraine to start importing the natural gas purchased on the European spot markets through the territory of Hungary.

“For many years Ukraine has been engaged in difficult negotiations with our neighbors, and only Hungary resolved this issue, providing a breakthrough in Ukraine’s energy independence,” the prime minister said.

Azarov is in an official visit to Hungary. As reported on March 28, 2013, Ukraine started shipping natural gas from Hungary.

As reported, because of Russian Gazprom’s plans to reduce gas shipments to Europe via the Ukrainian gas transportation system and Moscow’s unwillingness to reduce the gas price for Ukraine, Kyiv in November of 2012 began using its gas transportation facilities in reverse to bring in gas from Europe.
