You're reading: Boryspil puts freeze on Aerosvit flights (updated)

Ukraine’s Boryspil International Airport on March 14 halted flights by the nation’s leading passenger air carrier, Aerosvit, due to late payment for services provided.

Certain to be disturbing news for thousands of passengers as well as the airline’s owner, billionaire Igor Kolomoisky, the decision was revealed on March 14 by airport officials to Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

Speaking with the Kyiv Post, Aerosvit spokesperson Serhiy Kutsy could not immediately say how many flights were affected, insisting only that they were “delayed, not cancelled.”

Aerosvit’s 27 Boeing aircraft as well as Airbus and Embraer planes owned by partner airlines (Windrose and Donbasaero) operate 80 international routes to 33 countries.

The freeze on service of Aerosvit flights was said by airport officials to be a response to the airline’s late payment on bills for services provided.

Aerosvit officials downplayed the incident insisting that their company had already made all necessary payments adding that the delays are temporary and of a technical nature. Indeed, registration resumed on Aerosvit flights late in the afternoon, according to reports.

“The delay of departure flights from Boryspil airport was caused by a technical glitch in the payment for airport services,” Aerosvit’s press service said in an emailed statement.

“Payment has, as of this moment, been made. We await resumption of the flights,” the company added.
