You're reading: Chicken and egg exports to EU could begin in September

Ukraine’s Agricultural Ministry recently announced that it expects poultry and egg producers to begin exports to the EU in September. Under the current agreement with the European Commission, the country will be allowed to export up to 20 kilotons of chicken fillet and 20 kilotons of other chicken parts to the EU annually, Ukrainian News reported. The new market will provide top Ukrainian agribusinesses with access to more than 500 million consumers.

Last year on December 4, the European Commission formally
allowed imports of Ukrainian poultry, eggs and other products to enter the
European Union. This opened the EU market to Ukraine’s top agricultural
corporations such as London-listed Myronivskyi Khliboprodukt (MHP), which
specializes in poultry and poultry products, as well as Avangard and Agromars,
two egg providers.

During the initial proceedings, the Ukrainian Agricultural
Ministry estimated that bureaucratic procedures within the EU could hold up the
exportation by several months. True to their hypothesis, the new date is much
later than the projected date of June 2013 by the Ukrainian Association of
Poultry Producers.

Although this date is later than expected, financial analysis
group Dragon Capital believes that MHP could account for at least 50 percent of
the agreed initial export volume. This means providing 10 kilotons of chicken
fillets and 10 kilotons of other chicken parts. Considering that Ukraine
exported 50 kilotons of poultry products in 2011, which represented only 5
percent of its total poultry production, this expectation seems plausible.
