You're reading: Klitschko: Gas contract with Russia pushing Ukraine towards alternative energy sources

Leader of the UDAR Party Vitali Klitschko has said that Ukraine should search for alternative energy sources and introduce energy saving technologies instead of focusing only on gas talks with Russia.

“The agreement was signed [in 2009] and this is a done deal. We can
debate whether it is good or bad for us. But it is experts who have to
discuss this. However, it should push us, Ukraine, towards [the search
for] alternative energy sources and [the use of] energy saving
technologies,” he said in the Face to Face program by Savik Shuster on
the First National Channel on Monday.

Klitschko noted that the first metallurgy plant in the last 30 years opened in Ukraine recently.

“Everything that works for us today is a present we received from the
Soviet Union. These technologies have been used more than 20 years ago.
This should stimulate us to develop our own fields, the Black Sea
shelf, and hold negotiations with other partners, instead of just
focusing on the gas of our Eastern partner,” he said.
