Jan Kulczyk, the Polish businessman and owner of Kulczyk Investments group, has died according to reports in the Polish media.

Kulczyk, who was the richest Polish citizen, died aged 66 as a result of complications after cardiac surgery.

In Ukraine, Kulczyk indirectly owned a controlling stake in KUB-Gas, one of the largest private gas companies in the country, and his structures continue to work on a project to export Ukrainian electricity to Europe.

Kulczyk was born in 1950 in the city of Bydgoszcz, he graduated from the law faculty of the University of Economics in Poznan and received a doctorate in international law.

Kulczyk entered the business world in 1981 by establishing the Interkulpol foreign trade company. In 1988, he began working in the automotive sector – he created the first Volkswagen distribution network in Poland. In 1991, he founded Kulczyk Holding, and subsequently worked in Europe, Africa and South America in hydrocarbon production and other endeavors.
