Ukrainian leadership will have to challenge gas contract with Russia in Stockholm Arbitration Tribunal so to protect Ukraine's national energy interests, according to an independent expert in the energy sphere, Oleksandr Narbut.

"Regardless of whether Ukrainian leadership wants it or not, but it will have to apply to Stockholm Arbitration Tribunal if the state really wants to remove the misbalance and protect the country’s national energy interests effectively," he said at a press conference in Kyiv last week.

Narbut said that the country should file several appeals, in particular, in regard with refunding of the loss the contracts have caused and an appeal concerning the revision of the contracts or their termination if it is possible due to the fact that they contain a considerable inadequacy to the present market conditions.

The expert said that the statement of Ukrainian power that proceedings in Stockholm Arbitration Tribunal is a long process is an excuse as other countries had settled similar conflicts with gas supplies from Russia.
