Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn has said that the assistance of the European Union in gas talks with Russia would be useful to Ukraine.

"Any assistance is useful. If there is such a desire and tools to help, then, it’s obviously necessary to help," Lytvyn said at a briefing on Tuesday, while commenting on a statement by EU Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger that the EU is ready to provide assistance to Ukraine in talks with Russia.

At the same time, Lytvyn noted that the European community had ignored the interests of Ukraine as a member of the Energy Community, while resolving the question on the construction of gas pipelines bypassing Ukraine.

"Then, for some reason, the position of the European community was not heard," he said.

Lytvyn said that the decision to start the construction of bypass pipelines was made without respective consultations with Ukraine.

"I hope that apart from intentions, there will be practical action," Lytvyn said.
