The bitcoin cryptocurrency cannot be used on the territory of Ukraine as a means of payment, according to a statement by the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) on its page on Facebook.

“The bitcoin cryptocurrency as quasi money without providing real value cannot be used by individuals and legal entities on the territory of Ukraine as a means of payment, because this contradicts the norms of Ukrainian legislation,” reads the report.

In addition, according to the NBU, the international spread of payments using the bitcoin made this category of services attractive to illegal actions, including the laundering of proceeds from crime or financing terrorism.

The bitcoin is one of the most popular alternatives to traditional currencies. It has no a single emission center. At the same time, the issue of bitcoins is limited algorithmically: theoretically every owner of a powerful computer can “extract” bitcoins using computing power, but the total amount of money in circulation is limited – now about 12 million coins.
