A total of 15 Ukrainian banks or 8.6% of the total number of operating credit and financial institutions saw a net loss in the first quarter of 2012, while in 2011 some 31 banks or 17.7% of the total number of banks saw loss, reads a posting on the National Bank of Ukraine's (NBU) Web site.

According to the report, the consolidated net profit of 174 Ukrainian banks in January-March 2012 amounted to UAH 1.725 billion, while in Q4, 2011, its consolidated net loss totaled UAH 2.066 billion, in Q3, 2011 it came to UAH 4.58 billion, in Q2, 2011 – UAH 851 million and in Q1, 2011 – UAH 211,000. The total loss of 15 unprofitable banks in Q1, 2012 came to UAH 315.575 million.

The NBU said that in January-March 2012 banks of a group of the largest banks in the country saw profits over the period (17 banks, which share of total assets stood at 66.3%).

VTB Bank saw the largest profit (the largest indicator for the whole banking system – UAH 585.211 million), while PrivatBank, the largest bank in total assets, saw UAH 267.011 million in net profit, and Oschadbank saw UAH 178.304 million in net profit.

Finance and Credit Bank saw UAH 35,000 in net profit, Bank Nadra –UAH 285,000 and Brokbusinessbank – UAH 2.065 million.

In January-March 2012, 17 largest banks saw UAH 1.349 billion in net profit of 78.2% of total indicator for the whole banking system.
