You're reading: Onishchenko: Russia bans import of over 120 tonnes of Ukrainian cheese

Five tonnes of Ukrainian cheese have been seized in Russia and yet over another 120 tonnes were stopped from being imported into the country over quality complaints, head of the Russian consumer rights watchdog (Rospotrebnadzor) and Russia's chief medical officer Gennady Onishchenko told Interfax on Wednesday.

"In all, we banned and recalled from sale about five tonnes. Yet another 128 tonnes were stopped at the border and not let into the country," Onishchenko said.

The recall of the Ukrainian cheese in Russian regions continues, he said.

Earlier, on Monday, Feb. 13, Ukraine accused Russia of blocking Ukrainian cheese imports for political reasons in an escalation of a food quality dispute between the two former Soviet nations.

Russian consumer goods watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, barred imports of cheese made by three Ukrainian producers last week after accusing them of using excessive quantities of palm oil, a cheap substitute for milk.

Ukrainian producers deny this and officials from both sides agreed last Thursday to resolve the issue by having Rosportebnadzor inspect their facilities together with the Ukrainian authorities.
