President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko in a telephone conversation with President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy discussed trilateral gas consultations between Ukraine, Russia and the EU and noted significant progress in the achievement of agreements on Russian gas supply to Ukraine.

The president noted a particular role of the EU in the given process, especially of President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso and Vice-President of the European Commission, Commissioner for Energy Günther Oettinger.

Rompuy congratulated Ukrainian head of state on holding of democratic parliamentary elections which is a success in light of the difficult situation in the country.

For his part, Poroshenko expressed gratitude to Rompuy for support and added that under the conclusions of the European Parliament, the OSCE, the Council of Europe and other international observers, elections to the Verkhovna Rada are free, transparent and competitive.

Besides, the Ukrainian president mentioned substantial contribution of Herman Van Rompuy to the development of relations between Ukraine and the EU during 5 years of his presidency in the European Council and invited him to visit Ukraine.
