Ukraine in September 2011 boosted steel production by 0.7% compared to September 2010, to 2.78 million tonnes, placing it tenth on the ranking of the 64 main steel producers compiled by the World Steel Association (WSA).

In August 2011, Ukraine ranked ninth and in July tenth.

The top ten producing countries in September 2011 were: China (56.7 million tonnes, a 16.5% rise), Japan (8.882 million tonnes, a 3.8% fall), the United States (7.19 million tonnes, an 8.9% rise), India (5.95 million tonnes, a 5.2% rise), Russia (5.76 million tonnes, a 0.8% rise), South Korea (5.478 million tonnes, a 17.7% rise), Germany (3.654 million tonnes, a 10.3% rise), Turkey (2.997 million tonnes, a 16.9% rise), Brazil (2.807 million tonnes, a 3.8% rise) and Ukraine (2.78 million tonnes, a 0.8% fall).

An increase in steel production in September 2011 from August 2011 was recorded in all of the top ten countries, apart from Japan and Ukraine.

Major steel producing countries (98% of the world’s production) in September 2011 smelted 123.567 million tonnes of steel, which was 9.7% up on September 2010.

January through September 2011 sixty-four countries produced 1.134 billion tonnes of steel, which was 8.2% up on the same period of 2010.

The top ten steel-producing countries in the first nine months of 2011 were the following: China (525.735 million tonnes, a 10.7% rise), Japan (81.015 million tonnes, a 1.1% decline), the United States (64.682 million tonnes, a 6.2% rise), India (53.906 million tonnes, a 5.3% rise), Russia (51.87 million tonnes, a 4.3% rise), South Korea (50.628 million tonnes, an 18.7% rise), Germany (34.139 million tonnes, a 3.6% rise), Ukraine (33.559 million tonnes, a 12.4% rise), Brazil (32.82 million tonnes, a 23.8% rise), and Turkey (29.002 million tonnes, a 14.6% rise).

The top ten producers in 2010 as a whole were: China with 626.654 million tonnes, up 9.3% on 2009; Japan with 109.6 million tonnes, up 25.2%; the United States with 80.594 million tonnes, up 38.5%; Russia with 67.021 million tonnes, up 11.7%; India with 66.848 million tonnes, up 6.4%; South Korea with 58.453 million tonnes, up 20.3%; Germany with 43.815 million tonnes, up 34.1%; Ukraine with 33.559 million tonnes, up 12.4%; Brazil with 32.820 million tonnes, up 23.8%; and Turkey with 29.002 million tonnes, up 14.6%.

The main steel-producing countries smelted 1.414 billion tonnes of the metal in 2010, 15% more than in 2009.
