Ukraine plans to import from the EU about 5.9 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas from October of 2014 to March 2015, Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Yuriy Prodan has said at a cabinet meeting.

“We need about 32-33 billion cubic meters of gas for the heating season, starting from September. We will raise gas from our own storage – it is 10-11 billion cubic meters, gas of our own production (from October to March – about 10 billion cubic meters), what we receive via reverse supplies (from October to March – 5.9 billion cubic meters of gas). This is the balance – 27 billion cubic meters. We’re short of 4-5 billion cubic meters to successfully pass the heating season,” he said.

Prodan added that gas shortage could be compensated for at the expense of reducing gas consumption by fuel and energy enterprises and industry by 30 percent, by budget organizations – by 10 percent, as well as other measures introduced by the government.

“We believe that there will be the minimum [necessary] temperature in buildings,” the minister said.
