You're reading: Ukraine sees 3.6 persent fall in electricity generation in January-August

Ukraine's integrated power grids decreased electricity output by 3.6 percent or by 4.631 billion kilowatt-hours year-over-year in January-August 2014, to 122.493 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh), an Energy and Coal Industry Ministry source told Interfax-Ukraine.

Nuclear power plants increased electricity output by 2.8 percent, to 56.462 billion kWh.

In particular, Zaporizhia nuclear power plant saw a fall of 1.5 percent in electricity generation, to 25.074 billion kWh, Yuzhnoukrainsk nuclear power plants increased output by 39.2 percent, to 13.173 billion kWh, Rivne nuclear power plant decreased production by 3.1 percent, to 10.168 billion kWh, and Khmelnytsky nuclear power plant saw a 15.7 percent decrease, to 8.047 billion kWh over the period under review.

The ministry’s thermal power plants and combined heat and power plants decreased their electricity output by 4.8 percent, to 52.64 billion kWh, including a decline of 3.5 percent in output at generating companies’ thermal power plants, to 48.196 billion kWh, while combined heat and power plants cut it by 17 percent, to 4.444 billion kWh.

Hydropower plants in January-August 2014 saw a 37.6 percent decline in power generation, to 6.708 billion kWh, while municipally owned heat stations and district power stations increased electricity output by 3.5 percent, to 5.49 billion kWh.

The generation of electricity from non-traditional sources (wind farms, solar power plants, biomass) grew by 45.1 percent in January-August 2014, to 1.194 billion kWh.

The share of nuclear power plants was 46.1 percent of Ukraine’s overall electricity output (43.2 percent in January-August 2013), the ministry’s thermal power plants and combined heat and power plants accounted for 43 percent (43.5 percent), hydropower plants for 5.5 percent (8.5 percent), while the share of municipally owned heat stations and district power stations was 4.5 percent (4.2 percent). The share of alternative energy sources in total electricity output was 1 percent (0.6 percent).

Overall electricity output in August 2014 alone fell by 10.4 percent, or 1.555 billion kWh, from August 2013, to 13.47 billion kWh.

Nuclear power plants, thermal power plants and district boiler houses in January-August 2014 cut heat sales by 14.3 percent or 2.337 million Gcal, having sold 13.972 million Gcal.

As reported, Ukraine’s integrated power grids decreased electricity output by 2.3 percent or by 4.556 billion kWh year-over-year in 2013, to 193.563 billion kWh.
