Ukraine ups electricity exports by 73% in seven months of 2012

Ukraine increased electricity exports 73.1% year-on-year in January-July 2012 (by 2.25 billion kilowatt-hours) to 5.32 billion kilowatt-hours, a source from the Energy and Coal Industry Ministry has told Interfax-Ukraine.

Electricity exports from the Burshtyn TPP Energy Island to Hungary, Slovakia and Romania increased 31.1% (by 523.7 million kilowatt-hours) to 2.21 billion kilowatt-hours. Exports to Poland amounted to 526.9 million kilowatt-hours. Ukraine did not export electricity to Poland in the same period of 2011.

Electricity exports to Central European countries (Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and Poland) grew 62.4% year-on-year in January-July 2012 (by 1.05 billion kilowatt-hours) to 2.73 billion kilowatt-hours.

The increase in supplies to Europe is due to the resumption of exports to Poland in March 2012, the ministry said.

Belarus imported 2.11 billion kilowatt-hours of Ukrainian electricity in the seven months, 100% more than in the same period of 2011 (1.08 billion kilowatt-hours more).

Ukraine exported 471.6 million kilowatt-hours to Moldova, compared to 301.2 million in the same period of 2011.

Ukraine did not export electricity to Russia in January-July 2012 but exported 55.5 million kilowatt-hours in the seven months of 2011.

Ukraine boosted electricity exports 52.5% in 2011 (by 2.21 billion kilowatt-hours) to 6.43 billion. Exports from the Burshtyn TPP Island to Hungary, Slovakia and Romania climbed 160% (by 1.92 billion) to 3.1 billion kilowatt-hours.

The main exporter of Ukrainian electricity since 2011 is DTEK energy holding company (Vostokenergo and DTEK Power Trade), which exported 5.09 billion kilowatt-hours in 2011. State-owned company Ukrinterenergo also exported electricity in 2011 - 1.34 billion kilowatt-hours (to Belarus).
