You're reading: Ukrainian car market grows 10 percent

Sales of new foreign cars (both imported and manufactured in Ukraine) in January-June 2012 rose by 21% over the same period of 2011, to 89,814 vehicles, while the car market as a whole (including domestic brands and Russia's LADA cars) grew by 10%.

According to the analysis of the market prepared by the strategic
development department of Atlant-M, the market of foreign brand cars is
gradually but slowly recovering.

“The market in June was slightly below the May level, which was often
observed in the previous years. Probably Euro-2012 affected the growth
in car sales as part of potential buyers postponed car purchase. If this
hypothesis is correct, we will see the increase in sales in July and
August,” Atlant-M department director Oleksiy Tereschenko said.

The leader in sales in the first half of 2012 was Hyundai, the sales
of which rose by 3% from January-June 2011, to 9,912 cars. Volkswagen
ranked second, showing the largest increase of 76% in the top ten
leaders, to 8,651 vehicles. Kia ranked third with a 67% rise in sales,
to 7,538 cars.

At the same time, Toyota (a 16% rise) and Skoda (a 29% rise) dropped
out of the top three brands, moving down to the fourth and fifth places
respectively.

According to the holding, the top three brands in neighboring Russia are Renault, Kia and Hyundai.
