Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych

The coal industry needs to be modernized, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

"Our coal industry needs [modernization] – that's the priority task of our government today," Yanukovych said at the events to mark the 80th anniversary of Donetsk region on Friday in Donetsk.

"People have been thinking for a long time that coal is an energy source of the past. Modern processes on the world energy market show that this is far from the truth. We have to settle difficult problems, problems that have been building up in the coal industry for years, and need to be tackled today," the head of state said.
