Ukraine will be searching for a compromise while negotiating a possible reduction in the price Russia charges Ukraine for gas, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

"We have been talking about this [unfair gas price for Ukraine] and we will make every effort to find a solution to this issue that suits both Ukraine and Russia," the president told reporters in Cherkasy on Thursday.

Yanukovych said that a year ago, shortly after assuming the post of the Ukrainian president, he had said that the current price of Russian gas for Ukraine was "unacceptable and improper."

He said that the price of Russian gas envisaged in the 2009 contracts was "impracticable for Ukraine."

He noted that even after last year’s talks with Russia, which resulted in the reduction in the price of gas for Ukraine, the price was still too high.

"We see that the situation is at the breaking point. We pay this price for gas, but it is very expensive… We are losing out, and we believe that this price is improper," he said.
