Lviv Polytechnic together with ABB opened a new up-to-date education and research laboratory. The equipment presented here will help studying advanced technological decisions for construction, operation and protection as well as automation of electrical substations and grids.

ABB, global leader in power and automation technologies, has opened an up-to-date education andresearch laboratory together with Lviv Polytechnic. This equipment will help students and specialists of power engineering department to study the newest technological decisions in construction, operation and protection of grids, automation of industry enterprises, etc. The ABB laboratory comprises two courses: “Technical exploitation of substations and grids operation” and “Digital relay protection and automation devices”.

High tech cross-connect equipment, switchgear, instrument transformers, relay protection terminal units, automated control systems and their elements, presented at the laboratory, are used in construction of new substations and power plants as well as in reconstruction of networks existing power transmission and distribution, and for power supply of industrial utilities.

“We are glad to open an ABB education and research laboratory at Lviv Polytechnic, the main Technical University in the Western region. With the equipment installed here students will be able to study modern technologies used for industry power supply and automation, along withdistribution networks. This is our second project of co-operation with Ukrainian Technical Universities. We believe that ABB contributes to the future of Ukrainian power and industrial segments by supporting Polytechnic Universities. Last year ABB opened an up-to-date laboratory at National Technical University “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”. Book value for the two institutions is more than 3 million UAH,” says Dmytro Zhdanov, Country Manager of ABB Ukraine on the occasion of opening the laboratory.

“Lviv Polytechnic is a University of three centuries. It has been a genetic medium of science and art evolution, political systems and regimes in Ukraine and Europe. Our University is always moving forward, seamlessly combining energy of youth with wisdom of mature age. Lviv Polytechnic has always been among leaders. It has been an integral part of European technical science and source of highly qualified engineering manpower at all times,” said rector of the University, Doctor of Engineering, Professor, YuriyBobalo.

The equipment submitted by ABB is now installed atUkrenergo, andUkrhydroenergo, Energoatom, and renewable energy facilities. It serves20 Ukraine regional power distribution companies, in particular, ABB equipment became a base for automation of Kyivenergo, Dniprooblenergo, Poltavaoblenergo, Chernihivoblenergo, Cherkasyoblenergo and Prykarpattyaoblenergo. At the moment wide implementation in Vinnytsiaoblenergo is being started for future creation of modern dispatching centers, which will improve efficiency of service and cut down the expenses. Apart from the power segment, thisequipmentis used at power supply substations in coal-mining, metallurgy, chemical, oil and gas and paper industry, as well as at airports, hospitals, shopping malls and business centers, data centers and TV broadcasting centers.
