Kyiv Post's Best of Kyiv 2010: Kyivstar
Kyivstar has been the undisputed leader on Ukraine’s mobile communications market since 2005 – and it is, again, in 2010. Both Kyiv Post readers and our expert panel agreed with this assessment.
Similarly, its top executive, Ihor Litovchenko, has for the second year ranked as one of the most reputable and most successful managers, according to business analytical magazine Companion’s annual rating.
As a business unit owned by New York-listed VimpelCom, Kyivstar has since September been consolidated with the Beeline brand.
Kyivstar had more than half the mobile communications market as of the third quarter of 2010 no matter how you slice it – 52.8 percent of subscribers and 53.1 percent of revenues.
Together, the two brands boast more than 25 million subscribers, 22.5 million of whom are Kyivstar users. By the third quarter of 2010, Kyivstar had boosted revenues by 3.6 percent in comparison to the same period in 2009.
Its nearest competitor is the Russian-owned MTS brand, which has slightly more than 30 percent of the mobile communications market.
Kyivstar provides GPRS services all over its coverage territory in Ukraine as well as international GPRS-roaming in 146 countries and territories. For its prepaid and DJUICE customers, Kyivstar provides international roaming services in 88 countries and territories. Overall, contract customers receive roaming services in 195 countries and territories on five continents of the world.
The company also believes in giving back. It implements a long-term, large-scale social program called For People, For Country.
Projects include outreach and support to orphans of nine boarding schools, support to the elderly living in retirement homes, support to rural people living with disabilities, support to war veterans, and it runs a scholarship program for talented students, among other endeavors.
Kyivstar has been a member of the United Nations Global Compact since 2006, an effort to develop a fair society and preserve nature.
