A member of the FEMEN activist group, Inna Shevchenko, on Jan. 15 was detained by police on Kyiv's main thoroughfare Khreshchatyk for hugging passersby.

Shevchenko, fully clothed and accompanied by a photographer from What’s On magazine, said police picked her up "for attracting a large crowd."

FEMEN supporters have scheduled a demonstration outside Kyiv’s Shevchenko district court on Jan. 17 to protest their the arrest of their colleague.

Members of FEMEN, a small army of 300 mainly student activists ready to take off their clothes in public to support Ukrainian women’s rights, has in recent months widened its activities to embrace wider causes. Members of the group attracted international attention when they ridiculted Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin during his visit to Kyiv in October.
