You're reading: Head of the Central Election Commission: Kyiv mayoral election should be held this year

Under the law, the election of Kyiv mayor should take place this year, Head of the Central Election Commission Volodymyr Shapoval said in an interview with Kommersant-Ukraine newspaper.

“This is obvious that this election (of Kyiv mayor) should take place
this year. There is a certain procedure for their calling, which is
regulated by law. The mayor’s office is currently vacant and it should
be filled,” he said.

When asked about the possibility of holding the mayoral election at
the same time as the parliamentary election, the CEC head said that it
was up to the Verkhovna Rada to decide.

“If the Verkhovna Rada determines so, so be it. The CEC does not deal
with this matter. We are authorized only to provide an explanation of
relevant legislation,” Shapoval said.
