The Euro 2012 European football championship is an image event and city authorities expect to see an economic profit in the future, Head of Kyiv city administration Oleksandr Popov has said.

“City administration did not plan to earn money. We wanted to earn on the
image, to improve it for the city and Ukraine. I think that the economic profits
from hosting Euro 2012 should be calculated not after the finish of the
tournament, but maybe, in a year,” he said at a press conference in Kyiv on
Friday.

Popov said that Kyiv authorities hope that plans on the strategic development
of Kyiv, including cooperation with foreign companies, will be actively
realized.

“The positive image of Kyiv is attraction of new investment, new projects.
Then we could calculate the results. As for quick economic result, this is
impossible,” he said.

Commenting on the infrastructure created in the capital in connection with
the Euro 2012 hosting, Popov said that it would serve for dozens of years.

“I think that here we don’t need to look for any economic indicators,” he
said.
