You're reading: Kyiv climbs to 61st position in Global Destination Cities Index 2014, expecting 1.79 million foreign tourists

Kyiv is three positions up in the Global Destination Cities Index 2014 and was 61st among 132 global destination cities, while among European cities Kyiv was one position up at 20th, MasterCard said in a study published on Wednesday, July 9.

“According to researchers, 1.789 million foreign tourists will visit Kyiv in 2014. Around $993 will be spent in the capital per visitor in 2014,” reads the report.

In money terms, the capacity of the entrance tourism market of Kyiv thanks to foreign tourists in 2014 is assessed at $1.777 billion.

According to the study, London is the world’s top ranked destination city with an estimated 18.69 million international visitors in 2014, a rise of 8 percent on 2013, and visitor spending, which is estimated to be $19.27 billion in 2014 or around $1,033 per visitor.

“The index points to a continued strong demand and interest in air travel, both for business and personal travel,” said Ann Cairns, president of International Markets, MasterCard.

Bangkok was second in the rating in 2014 (an 11 percent decline in visitors in 2014, to 16.42 million people; visitor spending will total some $13 billion and $791.70 per visitor), Paris is third (a 1.8 percent rise in visitors in 2014, to 15.57 million people; visitor spending will total some $17 billion and $1,092 per visitor).

According to the study, Singapore and Dubai are fourth and fifth with a rise of 3.1 percent in visitors in 2014, to 12.47 people, visitor spending will total some $14.3 billion and $1,147 per visitor and a rise of 7.5 percent, to 11.95 million; visitor spending will total some $14.3 billion and $912.10 per visitor respectively.

As reported, Kyiv was 64th in Global Destination Cities Index 2013 and 21st among European cities. MasterCard researchers predicted that 1.66 million foreign tourists will visit Kyiv in 2013 and visitor spending will be around $1,686 per visitor.

The MasterCard Index of Global Destination Cities ranks cities in terms of the number of their total international visitor arrivals and the cross-border spending by these same visitors in the destination cities, and gives visitor and passenger growth forecasts for 2014. Public data are used in deriving the international visitor arrivals and their cross-border spending in each of the 132 destination cities, using custom-made algorithms.
