Kyiv is stepping up security in the run-up to the snap parliamentary election scheduled for Oct. 26, according to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

“Given the information about the existence of a plan to destabilize the situation and disrupt the elections, where Russian special services and terrorist organizations are involved in, and a revealed plan to bring subversive groups to Kyiv to disrupt the elections by conducting terrorist attacks, tighter security measures will be introduced in the city,” SBU spokeswoman Olena Hitlianska said at a briefing in Kyiv on Oct. 20.

In particular, new checkpoints have been set up on approaches to the capital city and existing ones reinforced, filtration measures at train stations and other public places have been stepped up, security around government buildings and critical infrastructure has been tightened, she said.
