Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has tasked new head of Kyiv City State Administration Oleksandr Popov and his team with turning Kyiv into the capital of a European state.

"We should all turn Kyiv into the capital of a European state in a very short period of time," he said on Tuesday, while introducing Popov as the head of Kyiv City State Administration.

"We have set absolutely realistic tasks, and we can resolve them," Azarov said.

Popov, in turn, thanked Azarov for his confidence.

"I understand that this post is, first of all, hard everyday work aimed at the further development of the city," he said.

Popov said that Nov. 16 was the day when he was appointed the first deputy head of Kyiv City State Administration five months ago. He also noted that over this period his team had managed to do some work and added that a lot of issues had yet to be resolved. Leonid Chernovetsky remains the elected mayor of Kyiv residents, Azarov has said.

"He [Chernovetsky], unfortunately, is not here, but we could have told him many good words," Azarov said.

"But he, as you know, is not leaving Kyiv. He remains the elected mayor of Kyiv residents, and he will help resolve problems facing Kyiv according to his rights," he said.
