The Verkhovna Rada has slated early elections for Kyiv City Council deputies and Kyiv mayor for May 25, 2014, simultaneously with snap presidential elections.

A total of 331 MPs out of the 363 registered in the parliament’s session hall voted for such a decision on Tuesday.

“The elections for Kyiv City Council and Kyiv mayor will be held
simultaneously with the presidential elections in Ukraine. This will
save funds,” Verkhovna Rada Chairman and acting President Oleksandr
Turchynov said after discussing this proposal.

As reported, the term of office of Kyiv City Council ended on June 2,
2013, but the Verkhovna Rada was unable to set an election date.

The last elected Kyiv mayor, Leonid Chernovetsky, resigned in early June 2012.
