The construction of the second runway at Kyiv Zhuliany International Airport could start in 2014 under the terms of a public-private partnership, the press service of Kyiv City State Administration has said, with reference to its head Oleksandr Popov.

According to him, the commissioning of the runway will allow the
airport to double passenger traffic to about 2 million people a year.

“We plan next year to replace and reconstruct the apron and aircraft
parking places about 60,000 square meters in area,” reads a statement.

At the same time, expert from the Center for Political and Economic
Analysis Iryna Kava told Interfax-Ukraine that the construction of the
second runway at Zhuliany airport is not urgently needed at the moment.

She said the construction of the second runway is realistic, and
there should not be problems with the construction, but the issue of its
relevance remains open.

“For example, Stansted Airport (London) has one runway and services 18 million passengers a year,” she said.

Kava also noted that at present Kyiv has more urgent issues in the field of transport development.

Kyiv Zhuliany International Airport is among top five largest
airports in Ukraine in terms of passenger flow. In 2012, the airport
plans to service 850,000 passengers. Its basic airlines are Wizz Air
Ukraine and UTair-Ukraine.

The airport has a runway 2,310 meters long and 45 meters wide and is
certified according to ICAO Category I. The airport opened its new
international passenger terminal on May 22, 2012. On October 4, the
airport commissioned a new apron, which increased the number of parking
places for medium-haul aircraft from four to 10.

Kyiv Zhuliany International Airport in January-September 2012
increased passenger flow by 76.1% year-over-year, to 594,400 passengers.

In January-September 2012 passenger flow on domestic flights soared
by 122.7%, to 172,600 people, and that on international flights – by
62.4%, to 421,800 passengers.

The number of flights at the Kyiv airport over the period came to
17,606, or 93.7% up year-over-year. Some 9,462 flights were performed in
Ukraine and 8,144 flights were international flights.
