You're reading: Poroshenko says he is among opposition candidates for Kyiv mayor

Member of Parliament Petro Poroshenko has said he is ready to support UDAR Party leader Vitali Klitschko for Kyiv mayor if he is nominated as the single opposition candidate, not excluding that he himself could be such a candidate.

He said this in an interview with the Mirror Weekly Ukraine magazine, which was published on Saturday.

Poroshenko confirmed that he was among the candidates for mayor that are being considered by the opposition.

“Will Poroshenko give up this post if he is a single opposition candidate and if the opposition acts effectively to ensure his victory? No, he won’t,” he said.

He said it would be improper to give the name or political affiliation of the possible candidates, as the process of negotiations between the parties is still going on.

“There are proposals. I’m not insisting [on my candidacy]. The opposition itself is free to decide on who will be the best candidate from the team. If Vitali Klitschko is a single candidate from the opposition, of course I will support him,” Poroshenko said.
