The sanitary-epidemic situation in central Kyiv is at risk of deteriorating because of the unsanitary conditions for living and eating at the tent camp on Maidan (Independence Square).

These matters were discussed at a meeting of the staff in charge of sanitary welfare in the central part of the city, the Kyiv office of the Ukrainian State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service said on July 16.

“In the absence of urgent measures aimed at preventing an outbreak of infectious diseases and food poisoning, the sanitary-epidemic situation in central Kyiv risks getting more complicated,” the statement said.

Doctors and sanitary-epidemic officers are alarmed by the living and eating conditions of the inhabitants of the tent city camp. In particular, they are worried by the presence of dirty sheets and clothing that need to be disinfected (disposed of), the absence of a possibility to do washing and follow personal-hygiene rules, improper conditions for cooking and eating, and the lack of disinfectants. Besides, tents need to be replaced. Yet another factor of concern is the rapid rise of unregulated street trade.
