The Zoloti Vorota (Golden Gate) metro station in Kyiv has been included in the list of the 22 most impressive underground railway stations in Europe according to Britain's Daily Telegraph, the press service of Kyiv City State Administration reported on Thursday.
The station was opened on December 31, 1989.
The initial design of the station envisaged the creation of a rather restrained, utilitarian station, made in white. This decision was considered too weak for one of the city’s central stations. According to a new design that was created from scratch two weeks later, the new station would be an allusion to the temple architecture of Kyivan Rus.
Thus, the height of the central hall of the station was increased, and pylons were replaced with relatively low cylindrical powerful columns, faced with white marble. The white ceiling of the central hall was divided with diametrical mosaic stripes with brick grouting. Two-tier bronze chandeliers with 12 lighting groups each, covered with ornaments, were installed in the aperture between the mosaic stripes.
