You're reading: Celebrating Easter

You’ve got to learn the phrase “Jesus has risen” and the proper response to it (“truly he has”) before this weekend.

This greeting is going to hit you everywhere as the Orthodox Easter arrives.

This is probably the biggest Christian holiday in this part of the world, and 96 percent of Ukrainians are planning to celebrate resurrection of Jesus Christ one way or another.

There are four places we picked where you can join the festivities.

The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra Monastery promises that their celebration will be the biggest in Kyiv.

It is hosting an annual Easter charity fair though April 17, where you can buy huge ostrich egg pysankas (traditional painted eggs), including laser-decorated ones.

The purpose of the fair is to raise funds for children with cancer.

Kyivan Rus medieval history theme park, located 30 kilometers out of Kyiv, promises plenty of folk arts master-classes.

You will also get a chance to ride a horse, practice throwing axes and knives, shooting an arrow, taste medieval dishes and drinks.

Mamayeva Sloboda ethnic park invites you to take part in the night prayer in the Church of the Intersection of the Holy Virgin right on the territory of the park to bless your Easter bread and other dishes for the festive table.

You will also have chance to go up the bell tower and ring the church bells.

Traditional folk festivities will be held in Pirogovo village where you will also have a chance to make clay pots on the potter’s wheel, as well as ride a horse and taste traditional Ukrainian Easter dishes.
