Ukraine’s major electronic music festival, Kazantip, is on again. Having opened on July 25, it will keep on rolling until Aug. 22. So you still have plenty of time to catch up on some real summer raving.
The festival got its name from Kazantip cape in Shchelkino village, where the first Windsurfing RFA Cup took place in 1993. The first official Kazantip festival took place at the site of an unfinished abandoned nuclear power plant in Crimea in 1995 and was attended by roughly a thousand guests.
Since then the festival was moving from one place in Crimea to another, gathering more and more fans. There were several attempts by the government to close the festival for “promoting drug culture” and the like, but they all failed. Since 2001, Kazantip has been permanently stationed in Popovka village (30 kilometers from Yevpatoria, and 112 km from Simferopol).
The festival grounds were symbolically proclaimed to be Republic Z – a state within a state with its own rules and freedoms. Its unique spirit of 24-hour partying on the sandy beach of the Black Sea attracts clubbers from all over the world. The number of guests has reached 100,000 in recent years.
When it comes to dancing until dawn, you can choose a number of dance floors, each with its own deejay lineup: Euro dance floor, Water dance floor, Kiss fm dance floor, Atrium dance floor and Inside dance floor. Among the numerous deejays daily performing at the fest, there are plenty of Ukrainians, as well as guests from Russia, Europe and the United States: Hallucinogen, Prometheus, Future Engineers, and Dan Tait from Great Britain, Boris the Blade (New York), Hardy Hard, Dirt Crew and Vincent Vega from Germany, resident of Pacha club in Ibiza Matt Caselli, Kiko (France) and Dusty Kid (Italy) among others.
The festival will be officially closed on Aug. 21 with a set from Dutch superstar Armin Van Buuren. Van Buuren was called world’s best DJ by the prestigious DJ Top 100 poll and holds many other titles and awards, such as Best Album for record “Shivers” and Best Compilation for a “State of Trance” in 2006. The latter is also the name of his top popular trance music radio show, now broadcasting to over 26 million listeners a week.
