Get your stomach ready for a huge variety of tasty pancakes to celebrate Maslyana, an ancient pagan holiday symbolizing the return of the sun and warmth.

Most restaurants and many clubs promise pancakes and treats, winter after-parties, and so forth.

But there are five places we recommend that will give you a chance to celebrate the traditions of Slavic ancestors.

Mamayeva Sloboda ethnic park will give you a chance to watch traditional ceremonies and take part in a pancake eating contest.

If you prefer skiing and horse riding on top of the traditional festivities, then head off out of town, to Pirogovo village.

The Ostrich farm in the village of Yasnogorodka west of Kyiv offers you to jump in a sack and over fire – a tradition that is usually associated with summer solstice festivals.

You will also be able to climb a tall pole to get a present the way it used to be done on Maslyana.

The National Exhibition Center offers you to take part in shows that are associated with the ancient Maslyana, as well as a tasting of pancakes and medovukha, a traditional alcoholic drink.

All of these places will be burning scarecrows made out of straw that symbolizes the winter.

Kyivan Rus medieval history theme park, located 30 kilometers out of Kyiv, promises that theirs will be the biggest in Ukraine.
