You're reading: Analyst: Majority in new parliament will be unstable

Ukraine's parliamentary elections have become a prelude to the presidential elections in 2015, and a majority in the Verkhovna Rada of the seventh convocation will be unstable, Director of the Institute of Ukrainian Politics Kost Bondarenko has said.

“The majority will be situational, and there will be a
different majority during every vote,” he said on the First
National Channel late on Sunday.

The political analyst said that in order to fully understand the
balance of power in parliament it is necessary to see what the
majority component of the elections will be like.

“The current elections are actually a prelude to the
presidential campaign. Now we can say that the first act of the
presidential campaign has taken place,” Bondarenko said.

In addition, he noted that Ukrainian politicians had put “European
politicians in a very uncomfortable position.”

“Many people were ready to declare the elections invalid and
inconsistent with European norms and standards. Ukrainian
politicians, either representatives of the pro-government or
opposition camp, have currently shown that they can hold the
elections of which they are not ashamed before the world,” he
said.
