You're reading: Azarov believes Kuchma had nothing to do with Gongadze’s murder

Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov doesn't believe that ex-President Leonid Kuchma was involved in the murder of Ukrainian journalist Georgy Gongadze in 2000.

“Knowing the president well, as I worked with him for eleven years
and we interacted in different situations, both official and unofficial,
I cannot accept the fact that he could order such an offense,” Azarov
said in an interview with Russia’s TV channel Mir, which was posted on
the channel’s Web site.

The prime minister said that he suspected foreign involvement in Gongadze’s case.

“I judge from the level of performance: bugging the president’s
office, the fabrication of these records – this is the assistance that
was given to the people who were doing it,” he said.
