You're reading: Central Election Commission: Over Hr 1 billion required for local elections

Over Hr 1 billion will be required for the holding of the next local elections, which are scheduled for October 31, Deputy Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Andriy Mahera has said.

"I do not want to frighten you, but these will be significant expenditures. These expenditures could total more than Hr 1 billion," he said at a press conference on Monday.

Mahera said that the old wording of a law on local elections was currently in effect, while its new wording was being prepared for second reading by parliamentary committees.

"Once the lawmakers decide on the law that will regulate the holding of local elections, we will manage to submit our final proposal on the financing of these elections within several days," he said.

He stressed that about 80% of spending on any elections accounted for wages to the members of territorial election commissions and that under current legislation, this wage cannot be lower than the minimum wage.
