You're reading: Court announces break in Tymoshenko case until July 6

The Pechersky District Court of Kyiv has announced a break in its hearings of the gas supply case against former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko until July 6, giving time for her lawyer Mykola Tytarenko to study the case.

An Interfax-Ukraine reporter said that the presiding judge, Rodion Kireyev, had satisfied Tytarenko’s petition only partially, as he had asked the court to give him a month to study the case.

The court also declared unexcused the absence of Tymoshenko’s defense lawyer, MP Serhiy Vlasenko, in court.

Tymoshenko said that the court had denied her lawyer the right to examine the case materials.

"My defender Mykola Tytarenko has just been denied [time] to examine the case. In front of you the judge gave my defense lawyer only one day to study the case. This means that he will be forced to read more than 4,000 pages. Is this a sign of justice?" she said.

After the court closed the meeting, Tymoshenko told journalists and her supporters: "The fact that the court did not give me the right to defend myself properly is an example of how justice is not functioning in our state."
