You're reading: Court in Kyiv bans Communist Party from campaigning for Ukraine’s accession to Customs Union

Kyiv's District Administrative Court has banned the Communist Party of Ukraine from organizing and holding gatherings of Ukrainian citizens for a nationwide referendum on a popular initiative regarding Ukraine's accession to the Customs Union.

A respective ruling in response to an administrative lawsuit lodged by the European Party of Ukraine against the Communist Party was announced during a hearing of the District Administrative Court on Monday, the press service of the European Party of Ukraine reported.

Under another ruling, the court opened proceedings in the case and scheduled a preliminary court hearing for September 13.

The court also banned the Central Election Commission to send a representative to gatherings of Ukrainian citizens regarding the holding of a nationwide referendum on popular initiative on Ukraine’s accession to the Customs Union, which are scheduled for September 8.

As reported, on August 29, the European Party of Ukraine registered an appeal at the District Administrative Court of Kyiv, asking the court to ban the Communist Party of Ukraine from organizing and holding gatherings of Ukrainian citizens on the holding a national referendum on popular initiative regarding Ukraine’s accession to the Customs Union.

On August 16, the Central Election Commission received a report from the Communist Party of Ukraine on holding a gathering of Ukrainian citizens on the said referendum, which they are planning to hold on September 8, 2013.
