You're reading: EU ambassador to Kyiv attending Tymoshenko trial

EU Ambassador to Ukraine Jose Manuel Pinto Teixeira arrived at the Kyiv Pechersky District Court on Friday, where the trial of the Yulia Tymoshenko case began at 09:00 a.m. Kyiv time.

Before entering the building, the EU ambassador told reporters he has come to the trial because the European Commission has been closely following the gas supply crisis since 2009 and finds this issue important.

Tymoshenko resolved the crisis by signing a gas supply contract with Russia, the EU ambassador said.

Ukrainian Channel Five television is airing the trial live.

Teixeira has called "inhumane" the conditions in which the trial of the case involving former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko is being held.

An Interfax-Ukraine correspondent has reported that Teixeira was wet from sweat when he walked out of the courtroom.
